Florence Given – My View

Illustrator, influencer and now author, Florence Given uses her social platforms to voice her ideas on feminism. ‘Women don’t owe you pretty;’ her new book coming out this summer, encompasses all her ideas on feminism, racism and LGBT rights.

Unapologetically, Florence is controversial and bold in spreading her views and empowering women. Her written posts on Instagram are often influential and inspiring and involve quotes from her illustrations such as ‘Stop raising him, he’s not your son’ and ‘off for a shag.’

Her t-shirts, phone cases, prints and bags which feature her illustrations are bold and colourful and most importantly, empowering. Her products are massively sought-after and not just for their fun, 70s style, ‘instagramable’ aesthetic but also for the feminist messages behind them.

Although I don’t always agree with everything Florence writes about on her Instagram, her confidence and fearlessness is remarkable. Her confidence in her writing is purely inspirational and she is always headstrong in her written posts. Her illustrations and Instagram feed are aesthetically pleasing, always full of colour and appealing – something that I take inspiration from. The retro/vintage vibe is fun and ensures an empowering, engaging feel when scrolling through her feed.

Her bold writing style is unapologetically eloquent, she is not afraid to speak her mind and does so in an engaging and captivating way. Her fearless and empowering quotes have essentially become ‘famous’ within the Instagram community and are instantly recognisable to her name. This is one of the many reasons I follow and like Florence Given as an influencer, she is giving minorities a voice and she is ensuring she will be heard.

Over the past year, since dumping her boyfriend in late 2018, her popularity has grown massively and she has since appeared on BBC news and has her own Tinder campaign. Florence is only 21 years old and already has such a following, she has been described by Rita Ora as an ‘incredibly empowering artist.’ Her style and feminist messages behind her writing and her art is what I think make her exceptional.

Florence’s drive to speak her mind is extraordinary and her aim to empower women to embrace their sexuality and speak out against toxic patriarchal ideals, such as slut-shaming, is amazing. Florence is inspiring to me and many other women as she fights against archaic gender roles that pigeonhole women into fulfilling servile stereotypes. Her views are as important in 2020 as they were years ago, Florence encourages young women to feel as though they have a voice and do not have to fulfil these expected gender roles, some ideas many women may have not even noticed before finding Florence Given.
