Burberry SS21 Show, In Bloom Review

Riccardo Tisci’s In Bloom SS21 digital fashion show was a transportation to a fairy-tale like no other. Burberry has reinvented fashion shows; the audience-less show was set in a forest accompanied with dramatic mise-en-scène created by artist, Anne Imhof. Darkly romantic and almost ritualistic, Tisci’s show was a connection between nature and its nautical inspirations. Featuring aquatic themes and a quite confusing relationship between a shark and a mermaid; illustrations of sharks, fins and mermaids, slogans reading ‘Swim with the great Burberry shark at your own risk’ and the use of shimmering fish scale sequins were unique and exhilarating. In Bloom featured fisherman qualities throughout; the use of overalls, high-vis orange and fishing nets as elbow patches and bodices. Accessories focused on fisherman hats in an array of colours; black, blue and orange continuing to accentuate the out-at-sea theme.

Celebrating Tisci’s dynamic and unique work, his reinvention of the beige Burberry trench was presented in deep sea blues and were particularly versatile with denim and leather panelling in cut-out styles.

The set itself was structural and circular; representing regrowth and renewal. Tisci said himself, “water was a symbol of that, of newness and freshness and cleansing. Through water, life grows.” Having planted thousands of trees, the nature inspired performance was certified carbon neutral; deepening the connection to earth and nature.

Burberry’s SS21 show was new and unseen. Respecting the traditions of the heritage brand yet the digital performance was fresh and something to get excited about in this lockdown era. Tisci very much achieved bringing the outside in and brought a thrilling and mythological to the global online audience.
